El Yunque Rainforest

El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. It houses a very diverse ecosystem with hundreds of unique plants and animals, including the island’s famous coquí frog. Attractions include hiking, Ziplining, horseback riding and ATV riding. Tours depart from most major hotels. You can also rent a car and visit on your own. The drive is about an hour from San Juan.

Culebra / Flamenco Beach

This picture perfect island has been catalogued as one of the top beaches in the world by Conde Nast Traveler. It’s a mission to get there, but well-worth it. From San Juan, you need to take a taxi, Uber or rental car to Fajardo. At Fajardo, you then transfer via ferry or catamaran cruise to Culebra. Please note the majority of vendors near the beach are cash only.

Pork Highway

It’s exactly what it sounds like! La Ruta del Lechón, or “Pork Highway,” is a stretch along Route 184 with dozens of restaurants specializing in slow roasted pig and local cuisine. To get there, you’ll need to drive about 30 miles south of San Juan to Guavate. Thanks to food and travel stars like the late Anthony Bourdain, it’s become a must stop for foodies checking out the area.
